Good managers are all too aware of the impact that the outside
environment has on their success. However, the day-to-day
realities of running an organization and meeting customer
expectations often overshadows everything else.
This can result in limited time focused on implementation
of major improvements and changes in direction. It can also
lead to ignoring upcoming changes in the workforce, customer needs
and the legal and political environment. Many opportunities
are lost when the creative juices are eliminated.
A vision of what could be is extremely important in the
development of a long-range plan. The lack of an
entrepreneurial spirit in the development of a Strategic Plan will
result in a very conservative, easily accomplishable effort that
will be much less than the organization is capable of achieving.
The lack of vision is frequently associated with organizations that
have not met management or stockholders expectations.
In the words of John F. Kennedy:
“Some
men see things as they are and say why.
I dream things that never were and say, Why not?"
